What I do
I teach individuals to 'DRIVE SMART’ - to anticipate, plan, and be ready to change, while using the controls in a smooth and economical manner; and to have the confidence to pass a driving test. I prefer to do this in 2 hour sessions, but that must depend on the needs of each individual.
How I do it:
Everyone is different, but the standard should be the same. I work through three stages:
Stage 1:
Physical control of steering, gears, clutch, brakes - move the car safely and smoothly around the roads.
Stage 2:
Manoeuvres - reversing exercises! Moving the car slowly in restricted space.
Stage 3:
Learn to take responsibility for dealing with the road and other road users, with good anticipation and planning. Driving Smart!

Driving Tests
1. Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence.
2. Prepare for and pass a Theory Test. This is designed to ensure a good knowledge of the Highway Code, and UK roads, regulations and signs. In addition, a Hazard Perception section aims to prepare drivers to identify developing hazards on the road. Most Theory Test work can be done as home study, but but with a laptop in the car we can make sure that candidates will get no surprises from the questions, or the Hazard Perception Test.
Can normally be booked about 2 weeks in advance.
Cost: £31
3. Prepare for and pass a Practical Driving Test. This is the test on the road, in the local area, in the conditions of the day (except snow and thick fog). It lasts about 40 minutes. Can normally be booked about 8 weeks in advance.
Cost: £61.00.
These tests are managed by and booked through the Driving Standards Agency. They are not easy to pass.
In Cambridge in recent years the pass rate for practical tests has been just over 50%. My own pass rate in all tests is generally well over 80%.
To achieve success, I need to adapt myself to each pupil I work with. I will need you to work hard too!
The car I use:
Hyundai Getz 3 door, turbo diesel, manual gearbox.
Chosen for excellent all round vision, best views at junctions, and minimal blind spots. For comfort, the seat is fully adjustable, and the car is air conditioned.
The diesel engine has low emissions, but with a turbo charger for safe overtaking, and joining fast roads.
